StreamSweepers is a nonprofit river maintenance and restoration service, staffed by young adults from Central Virginia. StreamSweepers assesses the ecological health of rivers in the Piedmont portion of the state and removes small to large trash items from the river bed and banks. StreamSweepers is a program of the Center for Natural Capital.
StreamSweepers provides the following services to landowners and society:
First cleaning of entire river and stream valleys (meaning comprehensive removal of man-made garbage for the first time in the river’s modern history); Ecological river valley health assessments using U.S. Department of Agriculture methods; Maintenance of cleaned rivers; Payments to landowners for trees, native grasses, and meadows in their floodplain, and Degraded streambank restoration.
