On April 12th 2017, the Warrenton Cemetery was vandalized. The crime left nearly 100 memorials toppled, broken, and destroyed. The Fauquier Historical Society undertook the responsibility to raise funds and awareness from concerned citizens to repair the damaged stones. After three months of fundraising, on July 12th 2017 the Friends of the Warrenton Cemetery officially convened to create a new 501c3 nonprofit to carry the torch. The intention of the nonprofit is to educate the community about the rich history within the gates of the Warrenton Cemetery, and continue appropriate care for the tombstones. The foundation intends to fundraise and facilitate the restoration of the cemetery, continuing to keep focus on this vital historic asset in the community.
